Common methods for testing paper smoothness

09-04-2024

Smoothness is an indicator of the degree of surface roughness of paper. There are various methods in the world to measure smoothness, such as Buick, Bentsen, and Glay, which refer to the time in seconds that air passes between paper and glass surfaces. The smoother the surface of paper, the fewer gaps between its surface and the glass surface, and the longer it takes to pass through a certain amount of air, the higher the smoothness.

Smoothness is related to the forming process of paper production, which depends not only on the fiber morphology and processing technology during material preparation, but also on the characteristics of the paper machine. Smoothness is divided into two types: surface smoothness and printing smoothness.

Common methods for testing paper smoothness

1. Texture method

The tactile method is the simplest and most commonly used method for testing paper smoothness. Pick up the paper and judge its smoothness by feeling it. This method is simple and easy to implement, but it is subjective and not accurate enough.

2. Wiping method

The wiping method is to use a standardized wiping tool to horizontally wipe the paper under a certain pressure, and then observe the reflection on the surface of the paper under a light source to evaluate the smoothness of the paper. This method requires standardized wipers and light sources, which are more objective than tactile methods, but have higher requirements for the testing environment.

3. Glossiness method

The glossiness method evaluates the smoothness of paper by measuring its glossiness. The commonly used glossmeter is the universal glossmeter. This method has very high accuracy, but the equipment and operation are cumbersome and the cost is high.

4. Digital image analysis method

Digital image analysis is a paper smoothness testing method that has developed in recent years. This method utilizes computer and image processing technology to digitize the image of the paper surface, and evaluates the smoothness of the paper surface by calculating the smoothness index. This method has high accuracy and good repeatability, but requires specialized equipment and technology.

The YT-ABST Automatic Smoothness Tester is an instrument developed by our company in accordance with GB/T 456 "Determination of smoothness of paper and paperboard (Buick method)". This instrument continues the stability characteristics of our early products.

This instrument adopts the design concept of modern mechanical design combined with ergonomics, and utilizes microcomputer processing technology, servo control technology, and dual sensor detection technology to overcome the shortcomings of domestic instruments: the impact damage of heavy weights or heavy weight lever mechanisms on the specimen; The spring fatigue of the spring pressure mechanism causes inaccurate pressure and the thickness of the specimen causes pressure changes. Implemented one click fully automatic testing, reducing the labor intensity of users.
